What the Fed Taketh Away, Claude Giveth Back
Back in September, the Federal Reserve broke my heart:
The Federal Reserve broke my heart recently.
Now you might think that today’s post is about something to do with monetary policy, or the taper, or something high falutin’ like that.
Nope. It’s about a game. The Fed Chairman game, to be specific. And I’m heartbroken because the Federal Reserve took it down
And so, three years later, I wondered if anything could be done about it.
After some rounds of syntax errors and broken functionality, we had a simplistic version up and running. I then made good use of my deep expertise in coding, and wrote stunning lines of peerless genius:
Still wasn't good enough, and so it was back to the grind for moi:
By the way, I'm fairly sure it was a modified Taylor rule that was being used in the game, but I'm not sure what the exact specification was. Does anybody know? Anyway, further changes were necessary, and so on I went:
And two final tweaks later...
...
It's not perfect, of course. I loved the music, for one, and I don't know how to embed that in this. The original game had very nice visualizations and animations, which is also missing.
But I find it amazing that I, with the amount of coding that I know (which is next to nothing), could in one sitting in one afternoon conjure up a working model of a game that I can now use as a teaching aid. Or play around with myself, or share with the world for them to do with it as they see fit.
What a time to be alive!
And to any students of economics (or any subject, for that matter) reading this - build working demos. Any topic that fascinates you, interests you, is going to be of use in your careers - use LLM's to build working models, and share it with the world.
And this goes without saying but please, do play the game, and tell me how it could be made better!
